Difference of opinion

Wednesday, May 4, 2011

I am on a one-woman mission to rescue what I call "vintage treasures" and what my husband calls "all that crap crowding the house." In fact, just yesterday, he threatened an intervention. But do you want to hear something so astounding, so unbelievable that you'll be up nights wondering at it? When people don't pay the property taxes on houses and buildings they own and those said places become so derelict as to be put on the city's demolition list, those buildings are razed to the ground without a thought for what might be in them. Yes, some of them are empty or contain nothing more exciting than possum poop. And others... well others belonged to somebody's mother who died and their children took what they thought was worth something and the rest just sat there. Tchotchkes collecting dust but otherwise aging quite well without anyone fiddling with them. Fabric doesn't age as well but the rest... Or the barns and outbuildings with doodads that nobody knows what the heck they are but they sure look cool on your wall. Anyway, I was shocked. Still haven't figured out what can be done about it.

And so I make myself feel better by going to church garage sales where other little old ladies are more than happy to send their stuff home with me. Where they are tickled when I say I love things "with character" or that I was born in the wrong generation. Or maybe they are just happy to have someone appreciate all the crap crowding their house.

Anthro Clocks as Wall Piece - Beautiful!

Monday, June 29, 2009

(just a intermission here in Book Week to show these)

I received the latest Anthropologie catalog today and was struck by the beautiful clock face display in the background on these two pages. Don't they just have the most clever design team?! I'll have to start collecting old clocks from thrift stores and garage sales so I can recreate this look.

Cute Embroidery Pattern

Saturday, June 27, 2009
I found this super cute vintage stitchery pattern in my sewing stuff this last week and thought I'd share it. Do let me know if you stitch it up.

I'm busily working on my reviews for next week. :)

Arabelle Jell-well and 100th post giveaway

Sunday, May 3, 2009

I was sorting through some ephemera today and ran across this little leaflet/foldover promotional for Jell-well. They made packaged gelatins and puddings mid-century. I don't know anything about the company really. Since Jell-O was created in 1845 and named in 1897, Jell-well wasn't a predecessor of it obviously. The copyright date on the little paper doll is 1955.

And since this is my 100th post, if you'll leave a comment I'll put your name in a hat for an envelope of ephemera (including sweet little Arabelle!) and other goodies. I'll take sign ups until Wednesday 6pm central time. International welcome.

ETA: Wednesday evening - Comments are closed. Will post the winner in the morning. Thanks everybody! :)

day 2 of photo challenge

Wednesday, April 2, 2008

my palette is a rectangular lid to an enamelware box. it's a wonderful old thing i found thrifting. this is my favorite brush even tho it's just a cheapie and the tip is a bit bent from sitting in the water cup too much.
